Dublin’s 2016 Recycling Champion Has Been Found!!
Image: Margaret Dunlea at her home in Inchicore with Paul Mulhall and Iosach Oriain from Greyhound Household.
So, some of us had the absolute pleasure of spending part of our Friday morning presenting Dublin’s latest Recycling Champion; Margaret Dunlea from Inchicore with her prizes!
Not a bad start to the bank holiday weekend eh?
After committing to the Recycling Champion challenge at the end of May, Margaret and her family put in a considerable amount of work, which resulted in a 43% increase in their green and brown bin usage!
As a result of her dedication, Margaret today became the delighted recipient of €1,000 along with a 3 month supply of Obeo food waste boxes!
Speaking this morning, Margaret said;
I think everyone can see the logic of recycling. It reduces landfill sites and safeguards the environment well into the future. We all want to do our bit, for recycling to work however, it needs to be both convenient and affordable. Having designated bins has helped greatly here and Greyhound’s collection service is a dependable one. Segregating waste properly does require a re-education of the whole family to ‘put it in the right bin!’ My teenage boys are good for the most part but it has been a learning curve for everyone! I have been a Greyhound customer for a few years now and I have always found their customer service excellent!
Our reports also show that there has also been a 56% reduction in black bin waste across all 38 of this year’s participating households, a positive impact which is fantastic to see!
This is a record for the competition, which has now been running for three years.
Greyhound Household’s Managing Director, John Brosnan said:
The amount of waste reduction achieved by all the participating households was very impressive. It is indicative of what households everywhere can achieve by embracing recycling. My heartiest congratulations to the winner, Margaret Dunlea.
Don’t forget to watch out for our next Recycling Champion Competition! It really could be you!

Little Green Tips #6
#ThisIsAGoodOne #LittleGreenTips6
Allocate your main kitchen bin to your recyclables…
(you’ll always have way more of these!)
…and keep 2 small caddies on your counter or under your sink for food waste (brown bin) and general waste (black bin).
Washing out packaging and segregating your waste more effectively will soon become second nature because you will no longer have the room for lots of dirty packaging or food waste in your main kitchen bin.
You will also become hyper aware of the food you’re throwing away which should help you to save money when you’re doing your grocery shopping!

Industry News: Electrical Recycling
Irish people recycled 15 million electrical items last year.
The new annual report from WEEE Ireland shows a 15% increase in electrical appliances recycled.
The body said that Irish people are the best in Europe when it comes to electrical recycling.
Under the WEEE scheme, consumers can recycle electrical goods by returning them to the store where they were bought.
Leo Donovan, CEO of WEEE Ireland, said that the figures are impressive.
“We did about a quarter of a million televisions and monitors, about nine million small appliances, which would include things like toasters, microwaves, hairdryers – anything with a battery or a plug,” he said.
“And in addition to all of that, we’ve done over 600,000 large household appliances, including 90,000 fridge freezers.”
Last year, Irish retailers collected 15,706 tonnes of waste electrical and electronic equipment, accounting for over half the amount of this waste collected.
This increase – from 12,370 tonnes in 2014 – means that WEEE Ireland has the highest percentage of take-back from retailers than any other country in the EU, the company stated.

ONLY 1 WEEK LEFT!!
There’s only 1 week left in our 2016 Recycling Champion Competition and the heat is ON!
We are currently monitoring the bin weights of Denise Scully from Cherry Orchard and Margaret Dunlea from Inchicore. The objective for both is to legitimately move as much waste as possible from their black bins to their green and brown bins.
Next week, one of these lucky contestants will be crowned Dublin’s Recycling Champion 2016 and will be the recipient of €1,000 AND a 3 month supply of Obeo food waste boxes!
We caught up with Denise and she said that she has been busy making sure that everybody in the house is putting the right rubbish in the right bins. If something goes into the wrong bin, she makes sure the culprit takes it back out straight away :0)
‘It’s just a matter of getting into a habit of washing out cans and food packaging, checking what goes where and being more aware of food waste.’

Little Green Tips #5
Follow our Little Green Tips online to make reducing, reusing and recycling waste easier in your home.
Did you know that the average family wastes €50 per month on discarded food?
That’s €600 per year!
Using your brown bin saves money because you become more aware of the food you buy and waste.
It’s also better for the environment because you avoid sending food waste to a landfill where it produces harmful greenhouse gases.
Most importantly, recycling food waste is the law. Food waste can no longer be placed in your general waste bin.

Greyhound In Ardmore & Montrose
Greyhound is proud to have made a contribution to the Ardmore Montrose Residents Association’s Annual Family Fun Day which took place on Saturday 25th June.
We supplied some general, recycling and organic waste bins to help residents keep the park clean during the day. Our Customer Experience Officer; Iosach Oriain also popped in to to say hello and to make sure our information leaflets were available for residents.
Alan Smyth of the Ardmore Montrose Residents Association said;‘We’d like to sincerely thank Greyhound for contributing to our Family Fun Day and for supplying us with plenty of wheelie bins to segregate our waste on the day. This made cleaning up a lot easier. It was also very helpful for our residents to see the ‘What Goes in My Bin’ information leaflets. The Greyhound colouring packs went down very well with the kids too! It’s fantastic to see local Irish businesses getting involved with community events and it’s very much appreciated by all of us here in Ardmore and Montrose Estates.’
