Construction Waste Segregation Course – Alandale Logistics

The team at Greyhound Commercial have launched a waste segregation course to help customers reduce waste & cut costs.

  We recently carried out a construction waste segregation course with staff members from Alandale Logistics. Alandale are currently working on a new build project for International construction & consultancy company Mace.   The objective of the course was to educate and inform the users of the waste areas as well as the guys that monitor the area on the need to carry out proper segregation of waste.   The benefits of this are higher recycling and recovery rates which results in a more cost effective service for the customer.   Paul Boyle, Project Manager from Alandale said;
Since the training provided Alandale have seen a direct positive correlation between the way our Operatives now carry out waste segregation and our percentage recycling scores which have increased dramatically. My thanks to Naill and his team for their professional and positive input.

Safety Series: Builders Rubble

Doing a bit of DIY?

Please don’t dispose of your builders rubble in any of your wheelie bins!

Overweight bins are dangerous for you to move and dangerous for our crews to move.   Builders rubble will crack the bins and break the wheels. It will cause untold damage to our trucks; breaking the compactors and weighing equipment, putting trucks out of service. This then causes collection issues for the rest of our customers.   That’s without mentioning the possibility of pieces of tile or metal hurtling out of the trucks when they are crushed by our compactors!   Bins found to be contaminated with tiles, bricks or builder’s rubble will not be emptied and a penalty will be applied to your account.   This type of waste should be brought to a civic amenity. Or you can hire a household skip   Please think before you bin it!   Builders Rubble   Follow us on social media for more!

#BinArt: #SkipArt.

So this is what happened when we took an old skip and left Dan Irwin on his own with it for a few hours! Skip Art. It’s going to be a thing.

Our old skips are usually just scrapped when they go past their sell by date. We were delighted to be able to demonstrate our support of a local artist while up-cycling and re-purposing something that would not otherwise be re-used.   This SUPER COOL SKIP is now on display in front of our offices! It certainly cheers the place up. And…we think it looks so well that we have decided not to hide it away!     The next community clean up team that we have the privilege of supporting, will get to throw their rubbish into an original piece of art!   Yep. That’s how we roll.   Stay tuned for more #BinArt updates!     Who is Dan Irwin?

AMCS Accreditation

We are proud to say that all of the weighing equipment on our trucks has recently been tested and re-certified by AMCS.

The AMCS Accreditation demonstrates that all of the weighing instruments on our vehicles have passed NSAI verified re-qualification tests and are in compliance with the Legal Metrology (General) Regulations 2008 (S.I No 323 of 2008).   Legal Metrology is primarily concerned with the accuracy of measurements especially where these have influence on the transparency of an economic transaction.   NSAI Legal Metrology uphold and enforce accuracy and transparency in trade measures by certifying and inspecting measuring instruments used by traders and by inspecting prepackaged goods to ensure correct quantities. NSAI Legal Metrology also operates a calibration service for weights and volume measures. You can learn more about the NSAI services by visiting their website via the link below.   http://www.nsai.ie/Our-Services/Measurement.aspx *   The equipment calibration tests are carried out by AMCS on our trucks on an annual basis. Re-certification can also occur on an adhoc basis should there be a mechanical or technical issue with the weighing equipment on any of our trucks.   A qualified and approved NSAI engineer always carries out the tests.   AMCS is the leading supplier of integrated software and vehicle technology for the waste, recycling and material resources industries. The AMCS software suite is designed around best-in-class industry processes which underpin all waste, recycling and logistics operations.*   Greyhound customers can be reassured by the fact that we have active systems in place demonstrating our commitment to the continuous evaluation and improvement of our vehicles.   Our logistics team are dedicated to delivering the best possible service for our customers while driving excellence and raising standards within the industry.   AMCS, NSAI NSAI Logo *Sources: http://www.nsai.ie http://www.amcsgroup.com/us/about   For further updates please follow us on our social sites.

Safety Series: Medication

Disposing of any medication; prescription or otherwise, in your wheelie bins is really not a good idea.

All medicines pose a serious risk of harm if accidentally ingested. Loose blister packs of tablets could fall out of your bin and be picked up by a child thinking they are sweets, eaten by someones pet or even the local wildlife!   All pharmacies provide a disposal service for unused medication so there is no need to put anything like this into your bin. We would advise you to keep everything in a little bag or box until your next visit to your local pharmacy. They will be happy to dispose of it safely for you.   We should probably also mention that flushing medication down your sink or loo is not really advisable either due to the risk of harm to aquatic / wildlife that certain medicines may pose.   Better safe than sorry, we say!   Below is an example of a contaminated green bin that one of our collection crews came across recently!   Greyhound are committed to educating customers on how to segregate and dispose of various types of waste safely. If you have a question on a specific type of waste and how it should be disposed of please get in touch with us.   For more safety tips, follow us on social media!     Green Bin Contaminated with medication

#BinArt

Wheelie bins and skips may be functional but we have to admit that they are not usually very appealing to look at! This August, Greyhound Household teamed up with local art student; Dan Irwin, for an unusual project that we’ve christened Bin Art !

We wanted to see what could be done to make some of our bins and skips a bit more interesting so we commissioned Dan to create the very first piece of Greyhound Bin Art and to spray paint three wheelie bins and one big skip!   The only brief we gave him was to include the ‘G’ from the Greyhound logo on each piece…     Follow us on social media for our next #BinArt update!

Safety Series: Glass

Welcome to the first post in our Safety Series! The objective of the safety series is to promote a higher level of ‘bin awareness’; for your safety and also for the safety of our collection teams.

Disposing of waste in the correct manner and in the correct bin is not just a case of bin companies being fussy!

There are genuine health & safety issues involved in the collection & processing of your waste. Disposing of glass in your wheelie bin can be extremely dangerous!   Did you know that our bin trucks compact the waste as they go, so they can collect more waste while out? The compactor will crush any glass that might be in your wheelie bin.   Pieces of glass could be propelled out of the truck when crushed, injuring your bin man or anyone walking by!   Broken glass on the ground in your neighborhood also poses a danger to you, your children and your pets. Injury from broken glass in trucks can also occur during the processing of the waste at the recycling plant.   If our collection teams find that a bin contains glass, the bin will not be emptied.   This is one we came across recently.   Glass Bottles in a Black Bin, Beer Bottles   Unlike other materials, glass can be recycled an infinite amount of times. If you bring your glass to a local bottle bank you will avoid any accidents and it will benefit the environment too.   Follow our safety series online and on social media! Greyhound.ie

The ‘Power’ of the Brown Bin

A wise man once said ‘with great power comes great responsibility’. This is especially true when it comes to protecting our environment by reducing our waste.

Did you know that one load of food from your kitchen caddy has a lot of power in it?   If you can use the brown bin rather than using your black bin there will be a huge benefit to the environment. Brown bins waste can be used to produce compost on a huge scale which can then even be used to generate electricity.   1 full kitchen caddy can:   To show just how much power is in your food waste check out this video from RecycleNow which shows how much electricity can be produced from one truck load of food waste.     Stay tuned to Greyhound.ie or our social sites for more tips & fun facts!

5 Ways To Reduce Plastic Waste

5 Clever Ways to Reduce Plastic Waste Through Taking Simple Steps

Avoid using plastic bags: It is estimated that around 1 trillion plastic bags are used worldwide each year. These bags take centuries to decompose and can be harmful to wild/marine life. Your ‘bag for life’ is better for the environment and for your pocket!   Stop using straws: It is estimated that 500 million straws are used each day in America alone. They may seem small but they all add up.   Use a reusable bottle/beaker: It takes 3 times the amount of water to make a single use bottle then it takes to fill it! Single use water bottles currently amount to 1.5 million tons of waste per year and can take up to 1,000 years to decompose. Think before you drink!   Chose boxes over bottles: Buy detergents in cardboard boxes rather than plastic bottles. Cardboard is easier to recycle and can be made into more products than plastic.   Buy a travel mug: We are the 2nd biggest consumer of tea in the world. Think about how many paper cups you could save if you brought your travel mug with you!   Connect with us on our social sites for more top tips.
